A Guide to Implementing the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) for Software Management
As AI permeates our lives, its role in company operations is gradually increasing. At the same time, the management of software (computer programs) essential to company operations is also becoming more important. As a result, proper management and operation of software is required. For example, what happens when a software production company stops updating its software? What if the existing software does not fit their business and the production company cannot handle it? Such questions and problems are more likely to arise in the future.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has introduced a management method using Software BIll Materials (SBOM) as one way to solve the above problems for both the software producer and the software user.
An SBOM is a machine-processable list of software components and their dependencies, including information about them. In other words, it is a way to quickly identify who produced the software, where it is currently being used, and who is using it.
This way, if a problem arises with a particular piece of software, it can be addressed immediately.
